Discovering Yourself

For this week's sketchbook entry, I surveyed a few of my close friends as well people within my community, simply asking them, "what comes to mind when you think of discovering yourself?". Now, I got various responses; given that everyone's brains are wired differently, I found such joy in gaining insight into how they think.

As I dug deeper, I continued to elaborate on the question. "Do you visualize an image or scene? Is it a phrase being repeated in your mind, a stand-still moment in time/ a life-changing event that has shaped you into the person you are, or is it an ongoing development? Ultimately, I wanted to know how people perceive themselves now and what they see themselves becoming, whether they have quote-on-quote found themselves yet or not. I like to think that it's an ongoing development as we age, we learn to live more freely. We become more open to change and not being closed off to the possibilities that life has to offer. Opening our hearts to feel, our eyes to see, and our ears to listen is just the first step. The sketches following are just a few collections of visuals and word associations during our conversations.

So, I would encourage you to ask yourself to reflect on the questions: what defines you as a person more than what you do, but who you are?

"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others" - Mahatma Gandhi
